Ultimate Comics Spider-Man has lost a fair amount of momentum thanks to this Divided We Fall/United We Stand pseudo-crossover business. The fact that Marvel awkwardly inserted the much more enjoyable Point One issue right in the middle of this jumbled arc only further draws attention to that fact. Brian Bendis finally wraps up the tie-ins with issue #18, and the good news is that this arc ends on a stronger note.
The cover suggests a dramatic issue full of suffering and hardship as a bloody, beaten Miles crawls his way back to civilization after the big battle. In reality, the issue offers a more whimsical blend of action and humor as Miles clashes with a rogue Giant-Woman in the middle of nowhere. Most of the actual drama comes form his parents as they enjoy a welcome moment in the spotlight. Bendis explores the aftermath of Jefferson's run-in with Hydra, suggesting a less-than-bright future for Spider-Man's parents. Because really, having that job doesn't usually turn out well for people. But additionally, Miles' efforts to return home without blowing his cover add an extra layer of tension to the script. The result is a nice blend of humor and heartache.
