24: Live Another Day - "8:00 PM-9:00 PM" Review IGN All

Note: Full spoilers for the episode follow.

24 traditionally will go through a few big bad guys in a given season, with the trade-in of one for another signaling the next story arc. So while Margot may have unceremoniously handed the Big Baddie baton on to Cross and Navarro during the last episode, this week was the real transition. With the abbreviated structure this time around they're able to zip through those two in an hour before landing squarely on Cheng, aka The Man Who Tortured the Crap out of Both Jack and Audrey. His entrance at the end of the hour significantly raises the stakes in every way.

But that’s not to say this episode was twiddling its thumbs while it waited for the big reveal. Picking up with Jack’s pursuit of a desperate Navarro, this was yet another strong, fast-paced hour. I particularly enjoyed Cross and Navarro's "you throw me the idol I throw you the whip" moment, with Navarro getting predictably hosed when he hilariously asked where his car was. I actually found his blind spot here about getting double-crossed believable, considering he had just been burned and Jack Bauer was now hot on his trail within the last half hour. I imagine those things might throw anyone off their game.

Blue Estate Review IGN All

Some pieces of entertainment cross lines of decency with purpose and wit in an attempt to challenge or educate us. Many others cross those lines unknowingly, out of ignorance rather than malice. But Blue Estate vaults over these lines knowingly, willfully, and for seemingly no reason but to wallow in adolescent squalor. Its many failed attempts at humor make its bog-standard rail-shooter gameplay all the more unbearable, but the worst part is how gleefully self-assured it is in its outdated notions of writing and design.

You only need to play Blue Estate for a minute or two to know everything there is to know about its 3ish hour-long play time. It’s an old-school arcade rail-shooter, one that doesn’t add any interesting new twists to hide the fact that all you’re doing is pointing at something and pressing a button to make it die over and over.

EA Chief: Console Wars are Good for the Industry IGN PS3

Electronic Arts COO Peter Moore hopes Microsoft and Sony keep fighting to the bitter end.

Speaking to GamesIndustry.biz, Moore described how a healthy fight between the console manufacturers ultimately helps publishers like EA.

"Consumers love it as well, and it's good for the industry," Moore said. "You need powerful companies like Sony and Microsoft to be battling out with each other because it drives investment in their platforms. It drives competition. You want to see Nintendo come back with the Wii U. All in all, it becomes healthy for gamers, for the environment. When you have a runaway winner, that actually has a reverse effect."

Under the Dome: Season 2 Premiere Review IGN All

"The dome's trying to tell us something!"

"That's ridiculous!"

Oh, Under the Dome. Don't ever change.

Which is to say that's it's no more ridiculous that the dome is trying to communicate with people inside of it than it is for there to be a town trapped inside a giant, supernatural dome in the first place. So any character who arbitrarily dismisses anything, any theory, comes off like a goof.

"Heads Will Roll" had a few things going for it. It had a ton of big action set pieces involving metal getting sucked violently into the side of the dome, and it killed off a cast member or two (neither of them Junior though? Really?) Granted, Linda and Angie (if she's really dead) won't be missed, but their exists still represent the series trying its best to raise the stakes. Much like the series premiere itself last summer, this was a big episode with most likely a larger production budget than some of the other episodes that followed.

DBZ Goes Next-Gen With Dragon Ball Xenoverse IGN PS3

Time to battle.

Goku's battle against Frieza seems fixed in a lot of Dragon Ball Z fans' minds as the series' most iconic duel – so even though Dragon Ball Xenoverse's trailer promises it'll "break tradition," maybe it's appropriate that my first glimpse of Dragon Ball Xenoverse started there. The fight between the powered-up Super Saiyan and the whip-tailed alien emperor unfolded high over a vast lava field, quickly devolving into the rapid-fire punches, kicks, teleports, and energy blasts that characterize seemingly every high-level struggle in the DBZ canon – but wow, was it pretty.

2 New Batman Comics Coming in October IGN All

DC Comics is launching two new ongoing series set in the Bat-universe in October, expanding the Dark Knight's shadowy corner of the DCU.

According to Entertainment Weekly, Arkham Manor -- written by Gerry Duggan (Deadpool) and drawn by Shawn Crystal (Wolverine and the X-Men) -- follows the former Wayne Manor, which has been turned into "the local psycho dungeon, and, perhaps predictably, some inmates wind up dead."

Oddworld: New 'N' Tasty Revisits a Classic Oddysee IGN PS3

Retaining the 17-year-old Oddworld: Abe’s Oddysee’s 2D puzzle-platformer gameplay, HD remake New 'n' Tasty casts players as Abe, a stitch-mouthed factory slave out to save his fellow Mudokon workers from being slaughtered and sold as meat products by their sinister employer. Abe is puny and mostly unarmed, so this means negotiating a whole lot of traps and automated defenses, sneaking past (and, when possible, mentally controlling) gun-toting Slig guards, and shepherding other hapless Mudokons to "bird portals" that can teleport them to safety. (It also means getting splattered into gruesome chunks every few minutes, if you're as bad at timing jumps or explosive off-switch presses as I was.)

Battle Princess of Arcadias IGN All

Battle Princess of Arcadias wasn’t announced with much fanfare, but I sat up and took notice anyway. It immediately reminded me of games like Odin Sphere and Grim Grimoire, and since I’m a huge Vanillaware fan, I knew I had to play it. I can’t say that Battle Princess can go toe to toe with Odin Sphere, but it is bubbly mix of beat ‘em up, role-playing, and strategy kept me smiling the whole time I played it.

The first thing I noticed about Battle Princess is its bright and beautiful world, which sets it apart from the more common drab, post-apocalyptic look of so many other games about a world in need of a savior. It’s clear that developer Apollosoft took its art direction cues from Vanillaware (forests and mountains look like they’re copied directly from Odin Sphere), and Battle Princess does a good job capturing the vibrant color palette. Unfortunately, it also looks like an old Flash game, based on the at times flat and choppy quality of the animation. I was relieved to find that choppiness doesn’t affect the gameplay in any way, since much of Battle Princess’ fun lies in the fast-paced combat.

Miyamoto: 'There Needs to be a Nintendo Genre' IGN All

In Tomodachi Life, Miis have nightmares of escaping hat-shaped traps. A Super Mario 3D World power-up turns the iconic plumber and his friends into cats. And in the upcoming Splatoon, teenagers can transform into squids –– Nintendo has never been the leading proponent for realistic games.

Shigeru Miyamoto prefers it that way. During an E3 interview with LA Times Hero Complex, the Legend of Zelda and Donkey Kong creator said that Nintendo's offbeat titles aren't accidental.

“It’s not that I don’t like serious stories or that I couldn’t make one, but currently in the video game industry you see a lot of game designers who are working really hard to make their games seem really cool,” Miyamoto said. “For a lot of us at Nintendo, it’s difficult to decide what cool is. In fact, it’s a lot easier for us to laugh at ourselves. It’s almost as if we’re performers. Our way of performing is by creating these fun, odd and goofy things.”

Details on Cliff Bleszinski's Next Game Coming This Week IGN All

In February, former Gears of War designer Cliff Bleszinski said he'll never make another disc-based game, citing titles like Rust and Minecraft as examples of where he thinks the game industry should be going. Today, Bleszinski said he would announce details on his next project soon.

"I'm officially coming out of retirement to make video games again," he said on Twitter. "Stay tuned here for details in the next 7 days!"

Rust, the open world survival game created by the makers of Garry's Mod, tasks players with surviving, in spite of other players attempting to do the same. Bleszinski said future games should be fostering players' creativity like Rust does, and that he wanted to make a title that would allow him to have a closer relationship with players.

15 Gloriously Ridiculous Michael Bay Moments IGN All

Spectacular explosions. Slow-motion running. Hot women. And sometimes all three together. No one goes to a Michael Bay movie expecting a sensitive portrayal of humanity – they’re in it for the Bayhem, that trademark blend of IMAX-sized OTT edited together for maximum impact. With Transformers: Age Of Extinction about to set the Dinobots on cinemas, we thought we’d don the safety goggles for a recap of his biggest bits on film, with one advert thrown in for good measure.

The Egyptian finale contains enough daftness to fill this whole list – Shia Labeouf’s endless sliding over cars, Optimus getting pimped out into flymode, Devastator's huge swinging bollocks, Shia dying and talking to the metal gods, Prime turning The Fallen, Megatron and half of ancient Giza into rubble. Did we mention Devastator’s nards? But you can’t beat a good old fashioned slo-mo running from an explosion: in this case, it’s the biggest bang ever shot on film with actual live actors in it. And also Josh Duhamel.

Halt and Catch Fire: "Adventure" Review IGN All

Full spoilers for the episode to follow.

With “Adventure,” Halt and Catch Fire delivers its most satisfying episode since the pilot, shedding light on all three of our main characters by delicately exploring the relationships with their family. This episode is deftly written with interesting new developments for Cameron, Gordon, and Joe, and even introduces some much-needed characters for comedy relief.

The common theme of this episode appears to be fathers; we see Joe MacMillan Sr. come around looking for Joe, Gordon’s big shot father-in-law helps him out in setting up a meeting with Japanese electronics manufacturers, and we learn that Cameron may have some father issues stemming from losing hers in Vietnam. The episode never underlines the theme, but rather lets it flow naturally over the course of the episode.
