Detective Comics #21 Review IGN All

With Emperor Penguin (or the Pharaoh of Blackgate or whatever insane moniker he has now) behind bars, Batman finds himself surrounded by several ladies with their own agendas. In Detective Comics #21, writer John Layman reintroduces a few old friends back into the fold, while teasing his readers with hints about Harper Row's future as a crime-fighting caped crusader.

The issue opens with a flashback scene to remind us of who Mio is: a woman Bruce loved ten years ago, who's since suffered a great deal, both physically and mentally. As an assassin, Mio finds her way to Gotham, where she encounters the city's resident Dark Knight with a less than friendly welcome. Though their story has the potential to be interesting, it was the issue's weakest element. The former love interest with a tortured past (and boob armor) feels a bit cliched, and her involvement in the plot is overshadowed by Harper Row jumping into the fray.
