Disney has laid off around 700 employees from its interactive division -- about one-quarter of its global staff.
Though this is, of course, unfortunate, the layoffs weren't unexpected. Last month, it was reported that Disney was preparing to lay off several hundred people, despite strong sales and future plans for its vastly popular Disney Infinity game.
James Pitaro, the president of Disney Interactive, told the New York Times, "These are large-scale changes as we focus not just on getting to profitability but sustained profitability and scalability... We're not exiting any businesses, and we will pursue licensing partnerships in which we retain a lot of creative input."
