Steel Diver: Sub Wars is Nintendo’s first foray into free-to-play game design, and I have to admit that going in I expected to find a simplified version of the original 3DS launch game. To my pleasant surprise, Sub Wars refines its predecessor’s gameplay, combining separate modes into a single, multiplayer-focused experience. With plenty of calculated action and vast amounts of customization, Sub Wars is fun no matter if you pay for it or not.
Gone are the separate 2D shoot-em-up-esque missions, the gyro-based periscope levels, and the turn-based multiplayer battles of the original Steel Diver. Instead, Sub Wars effectively combines them into one slow-paced underwater first-person shooter. The goal is to use the submarine’s abilities – including sonar, the periscope, and both regular and homing torpedoes – to hunt down and eliminate all enemies. Combining the better elements of each of Steel Diver’s separate modes not only makes Sub Wars feel more unified, but having the freedom to fully exploit a sub’s abilities at will makes each battle more unique and unpredictable.
