Nintendo has announced that they will allow Super Smash Bros. Melee to be part of the 2014 Evolution World Championships, marking the second straight year the 13-year-old arena brawler has graced the tournament.
The decision by Nintendo represents a near complete 180 for the company, which attempted to shut down the 700-player Melee tournament last year. Perhaps Nintendo has begun to realize what companies like Capcom, Blizzard, Valve, and Riot have already figured out: that the competitive community helps drive the popularity and profile of their games.
With a new Smash Bros. in the works for the Wii U and 3DS, it should be interesting to see if Melee’s sudden emergence on the mainstream tournament scene will influence the upcoming iteration’s design. After all, there are reasons besides nostalgia that competitors prefer Melee to the newer Brawl (such as the terrible random tripping mechanic).
