I continue to enjoy how this show selectively uses flashbacks to fill us in on more of the history between Elizabeth and Philip. The ones in this episode served a couple of purposes, showing us more of the friendship between Elizabeth and her fellow spy (and now murder victim) Leanne, and a promise Elizabeth made to her years before. The flashbacks also reminded us of just how difficult it was for there to be intimacy for Elizabeth and Philip within their manufactured marriage. We learned here, in fact, that it was years before she even slept with him, and only then because she felt they should have kids - and we already knew it would be a lot longer before she’d actually love him. It’s really interesting seeing these glimpses at this evolution through the years and its many ups and downs.
