The Avengers vs. X-Men #1 Skottie Young variant cover that took the Internet by storm with baby versions of the heroes has now been fully realized as a one-shot that gives a new take on the material, and you can bet that it’s even cuter than two kittens in a teacup. Much like last year’s Fear Itself follow-up Shame Itself, A-Babies vs. X-Babies gives readers a humorous, refreshing story that has some fun now that the dramatic mega-event has ended.
Given how well-received Young’s artwork was, it feels strange for him to be the writer of this issue instead of the artist. Japanese art team Gurihiru does a fine job putting Young’s character designs into action, but their artwork lacks the extra magical touch that makes Young’s work so endearing. This book has undeniable charm that becomes hindered only by the thought of how much more special it could have been under Young’s pencil.
