Avengers: EMH - "New Avengers" Review IGN All

In an era when the X-Men still reigned supreme in the comics world, Brian Michael Bendis managed to elevate the Avengers to the top of the sales charts with a little series called New Avengers. He found great success by giving his new squad of Avengers a distinctly underdog quality, and also because Wolverine and Spider-Man were added to the mix. This week's episode of Earth's Mightiest Heroes paid homage to that book in several ways (including an incidental character named Officer Bendis). With Kang back in action and the regular Avengers out of the way, the call was put out for a new team to save the world.


Other than War Machine, the new roster in this episode was comprised of characters from various incarnations of the comic book New Avengers team. It was an oddball assortment of characters, which was what made the conflict so fun. With Wolverine being his usually grumpy self, Thing brushing the whole adventure off as just another day in the life of a Fantastic Four member, and Luke Cage only in it for the money, this was a far cry from the usual Earth's Mightiest Heroes. Only Spider-Man seemed to take his new calling 100% seriously. The overall dynamic was strong enough that I never once found myself missing the old crew. That said, it was a bit annoying that Yellowjacket's long-delayed return wasn't even a speaking role.
