Inspired by a brutal attack he endured at the hands of hoodie-wearing thugs, Irish director Ciaran Foy has crafted Citadel, one of the year’s most engrossing horror films. The story follows Tommy (the stellar Aneurin Barnard), a young man who helplessly witnesses a vicious attack on his pregnant wife Joanne by a pack of hooded kids while they’re trying to move out of their ironically named tenement Edentown.
The attackers stick a needle full of some sort of strange drug into Joanne’s womb; she immediately falls into a coma (and eventually dies), but not before giving birth to a baby girl, Elsa. Now a single father, Tommy becomes ravaged by the anxiety disorder agoraphobia and is paralyzed with fear whenever he must venture out into the outside world. His only friend and source of help is Marie (Wunmi Mosaku), one of the nurses caring for his ailing wife.
