Fringe: "In Absentia" Review IGN All

Note: Full spoilers for the episode follow.


Fringe has a great cast of main characters, but I never would have guessed that this week a minor character would become the focus of the story and steal the show. I'm pleasantly surprised that a simple, unremarkable security guard gave us the most intimate look into this dark future and its denizens.


Before Manfretti the Loyalist security guard showed up, I figured this would be a straightforward follow-up to last week's episode. This story even started the same way last week's did, with a quick flashback to the day the Observers invaded and Etta disappeared. Then we're right back to Walter trying to put his thoughts back together, and although Walter's mind is still scrambled, he's got enough wits left to orchestrate a daring venture into Observer-occupied Harvard via steam tunnels. At first it all seemed like wash-rinse-repeat from last week, but when Henrietta broke out the torture device (a neat idea accompanied by nice special effects), the story quickly shifted into something much different and much more intriguing.
