MechWarrior Online Makes Over $5 Million in Sales IGN All

While the developers at Piranha Games have never taken their game to Kickstarter, and even have a publisher, that hasn't stopped them from crowd-funding MechWarrior Online. The difference is that unlike the typical venues we've seen, they decided to get their additional funding by offering Founder's Program, packages that allow early adopters to get in-game currency and boosts to their earnings, mechs and display special titles. The program officially ended a couple of days ago, but Piranha founder and studio head Russ Bullock couldn't be happier with how things turned out, seeing as the studio has already netted over 5 million dollars in funding.


To reiterate: that's over 5 million dollars. That's more than the Wasteland 2 or Double Fine Adventure Kickstarters (albeit the Founder's Program had several months compared to 30 days), and it's still not enough on its own to fund everything the studio wants to do. Speaking to IGN on the phone, Bullock emphasized that while this was a great bit of vindication for what the studio is trying to do, it still doesn't cover all the costs associated with making a game of MechWarrior Online's scale and visual fidelity. It does, however, give the studio better ground to stand on, and at this point gives them the flexibility they need to continue to polish and create even more content for MechWarrior.
