Note: Full spoilers for the episode follow.
Dear magic: who knew you could be so awesome? Once Upon a Time is already raising the bar for character development and storytelling, and it's only the second episode of the season. In “We Are Both,” the residents of Storybrooke begin to deal with the situation they're in, Regina goes to extreme lengths to get magic back, and Charming tries to find a way to follow Snow and Emma. It sounds like it's all serious business, but there were a few things to smile about.
The most dire takeaway from tonight's episode is this: everyone is stuck within the city limits. Thanks to the industrious dwarfs conducting a clumsy experiment we learn anyone who crosses the border loses all memories of fairy tale life. They assume their cursed identity. It's a smart way to keep everyone contained. No, it's not death, but it's serious enough to think twice about. You'd lose yourself.
