At first glance Sonic Jump appears to be a simple Sonic-skinned version of Lima Sky’s Doodle Jump. Sega’s titular blue hedgehog jumps ever upward through 36 stages and three endless high-score environments. Each small platform Sonic lands on serves as a trampoline, propelling him further upward through the stage. Players control the action by tilting their device left and right to ensure Sonic avoids obstacles and lands safely on each piece of precious land. A tap anywhere on the screen activates a much-needed double-jump.
In truth the first version of Sonic Jump hit oldschool flip phones way back in 2006, pre-dating Doodle Jump by several years. Even though Sonic Jump isn’t actually a cash-in of a big indie success, that still doesn’t take away from Sonic being a strange choice to headline an endless jumping title. In an era with high-quality endless runners of many shapes and sizes, Sonic Jump just doesn’t make much sense. The gameplay doesn’t match the character.
