Following up such a beloved run like Ed Brubaker’s Captain America work – which lasted for eight awesome years – is no easy task. When a particular character is under the guidance of a particular creator for nearly a decade, it can be difficult for the incumbent team to break free of those chains and offer a take that is distinctive but also appealing to those longtime readers. Luckily, new writer Rick Remender manages to do just that with the debut issue of Marvel’s new Captain America ongoing series.
Remender, as he often does, balances many different threads here. We get a revealing look at Steve Rogers’ childhood, his life as a modern day Avenger, his personal relationships, and then – and this is where the book really kicks into new territory – a mind-bending trip into Dimension Z where he comes face to face with one of the more bizarre Cap villains, Arnim Zola. The bits and pieces are tied together thematically by a brutal but ultimately powerful moment between young Steve and his mother.
