In 2012 Andrew Wilson is the executive vice president of EA Sports. It’s been eight years since we spoke, however, and I’m reminded of a sizzle reel he and his team put together way back in 2004 when he was the producer of Rugby 2005.
It was an embarrassing montage of American footballers scurrying after loose balls, feigning injuries and generally looking awkward, all juxtaposed against a rugby union highlight reel of mammoth hits, monster tackles and spectacular tries. It was a hilariously and deliberately one-sided video designed to pique interest in the game at EA Sports, and the room full of Australian press unsurprisingly loved it.
“I’d actually forgotten about that!” says Wilson. “Looking back now it was a lot of fun to make and it certainly raised a lot of eyebrows in the senior executive at that time.”
