Good news hit yesterday for fans of game-to-film adaptations when Tom Hardy was announced as the star of Ubisoft's movie version of Tom Clancy's Splinter Cell. Hardy, best known these days as Bane from The Dark Knight Rises, isn't just an ascending star but also an actual, quality actor.

As ridiculous as it might sound, franchise stars aren't necessarily the same thing as real actors. But with this announcement, and the recent reveal that Prometheus and X-Men: First Class star Michael Fassbender will headline their Assassin's Creed film, it seems clear that Ubisoft is attracting some real talent for their movies. And in the process, they might just be bucking the trend of mediocre-to-bad game adaptations.
