Square Enix has reported earnings for the first half of its current fiscal year, missing its targets due to “sluggish” sales. Square Enix earned 61 billion yen (roughly $760 million) in net sales, up 6.2% compared to the same period last year. Despite the increase, the company noted that “sales of console games as a whole fell short of the target for the six-month period.” While no specific titles were referenced, Square Enix is likely referring at least in part to Sleeping Dogs, which launched at #6 on U.S. charts when it debuted in August.
Square Enix did note highlights from non-console games, including Dragon Quest Monsters: Terry no Wonderland 3D on 3DS, which saw “favorable sales,” and mobile games such as Final Fantasy Brigade. Square Enix added that Dragon Quest X’s number of registered users has been “growing steadily” since it launched in August 2012. Outside of its game division, Square Enix noted that its Amusement business, which includes arcades, “was sluggish in terms of sales of machines and revenues from operations, which leads to unfavorable sales and earnings.”
