You probably know what Tourette’s syndrome looks like - involuntary facial tics, coughs, sometimes vocalizations including curse-words. It’s not an uncommon neurological condition.
In any case, it’s a media favorite. Think solemn TV docs of a man standing in church yelling obscenities against his own will, the voice-over all gentle tea-and-sympathy, the congregation stoic and understanding. But as a televised spectacle it surfs the contours of lurid Victorian freak-show. It’s us, looking at them.
Imagining how it must feel like to enter a room full of strangers, and begin a series of such tics, is not so easy as watching some other fellow suffer from its effects.
