While the very idea of a "sequel to a prequel" evokes a semi-warrented weariness, Death Race 3: Inferno is still better than it has any right to be as a continuation of the Frankenstein saga that we all saw the tail-end of in Paul W.S. Anderson's 2008 Death Race remake.
Dutch director Roel Reiné, who also directed Death Race 2, and was responsible for The Marine 2 looking ten times better than its budget, returns for Inferno, acting as lead dreamer and camera man, as Dougray Scott's evil Niles York takes over Ving Rhames' Weyland Industries with nefarious designs to turn the "Death Race" into a global franchise. Luke Goss is back as a surgically repaired, but still masked, Frankenstein, who's now one race away from winning his freedom. Danny Trejo, Tanit Phoenix and Fred Koehler all return as the Franken-team, unaware that their old mate Carl Lucas has been their Franken-driver all along.
