What in the world were they thinking by giving this issue the screwball number of 0.1? A Point One is a fresh jumping on point. A zero issue is a defining story from the past, usually an origin story. So numbering it #0.1 redundantly indicates that this starting issue is a great starting point. As a longtime comic reader, the incredulity of seeing #0.1 on a cover makes my brain explode Doop-style, so I can only imagine what a new reader would make of it.
Luckily, this book is so great, none of that matters.
Brian Michael Bendis starts things off by diffusing Peter Quill aka Star-Lord’s once-complicated origin down to the basic missing father figure/death of a loved one/angsty protector of the weak formula, but the emotional beats in his script are presented by Steve McNiven so strongly that you won’t mind. This issue reminded me of those heartwarming and heartbreaking first 10 minutes of the Pixar movie Up. Much goes unsaid, leaving the visuals to convey the love, longing, and loss felt by the characters.
