Talon has carved out a niche for itself as a relatively fun book amid a sea of dreary, endlessly serious New 52 titles. But the book has its share of darkness and pathos too. Those elements come into play even more in issue #6. Writer James Tynion IV ramps up the tension as Calvin Rose struggles to escape an impenetrable prison and makes a very unexpected discovery along the way.
This issue serves as a perfect illustration of Calvin's particular talents. He's not a head-on fighter like Batman. He's just a guy with intelligence and a knack for escaping seemingly impossible scenarios. That includes being locked in a cage and held at knife point by a trio of Talons. Tynion continues this trend here of devoting almost as much attention to fleshing out the villains as his lead heroes. He presents an interesting family dynamic and suggests that Calvin might not be the only Talon who has retained a semblance of humanity and nobility. I only wish he had a bit more room to flesh out the O'Malley clan before the issue shifts in a new direction. Several pages are devoted to a Batman cameo that serves no more tangible purpose than the cameo in last month's issue.
