Rob Zombie is not a filmmaker known for his subtlety. The four live-action features he has made thus far – House of 1,000 Corpses, The Devil’s Rejects and two Halloween flicks – have been filled with death and destruction. Murder and mayhem. And graphic violence designed to both shock and repulse.
Which makes the first hour of his latest film so surprising, as although The Lords of Salem is another horror effort, it’s much more of an understated slow-burn. Zombie endeavours to build suspense and tension before finally unleashing a truly bizarre hell on his characters, and while it’s a far from successful exercise in terror, you’ve got to respect the man for making a film this downright strange.
