Note: Full spoilers for the episode follow.
With WonderCon underway (and me on my way too it), I need to keep this review short. But what stuck out about “American Gothic” was how funny it was. From Caroline’s back and forth with Klaus – “Okay, I don’t know if this is some new way of flirting, but it sucks” -- to all the constant insults thrown at Katherine, to Stefan being a bit snarkier than usual (“Before you get your neck snapped, again”), there was a lot of amusing lines throughout.
Hell, even Elijah – not usually Mr. Chuckles – got in the, “Complications speaking,” line on the phone. And regardless, it was great to see Elijah again, who stands as such a fascinatingly specific character, with his own moral code. Him being with Katherine at first seemed bizarre – until he noted he had been in love with her hundreds of years ago, when she was a human, and couldn’t help but hope that woman was still there inside the monster she’d become.
