Arrow: "Home Invasion" Review IGN All

Warning: full episode spoilers follow.


Well that was depressing. It seems nobody was better off for the events of this week's Arrow episode. "Home Invasion" was full of death, heartache, and relationship breakups. Oliver Queen might just have to start wearing that dark eye shadow permanently. But as is usually the case in superhero storytelling, the more our heroes suffer, the more enjoyable the end result.


Initially I was worried this episode had bit off more than it could chew in terms of the running conflicts. That's been a recurring problem over the past couple months. Too many episode have just one too many concurrent plot threads vying for airtime. But the writers managed to integrate the dual threats of Deadshot and Mr. Blank surprisingly well. The latter villain was played by Angel alum J. August Richards and (as far as I'm aware) is another rare case of the writers introducing an original villain rather than pulling from the DC Universe. Mr. Blank wasn't any more fleshed out than most of the minor villains on the show, but he was fun regardless. Richards' performance was reminiscent of Brother Mouzone on The Wire - calm, collected, and even charming in an unnerving sort of way. And, of course, brutally proficient in the killing arts. His final showdown with Ollie was one of the more memorable hand-to-hand brawls in the show's life so far.
