Paul Raymond travelled from Liverpool to London with little more than five bob in his pocket, kicked off a career in entertainment as one half of a mind-reading act, painstakingly built a property and pornography empire, and eventually made enough money to be crowned ‘Britain’s Richest Man.’
The Look of Love – the fourth collaboration between director Michael Winterbottom and star Steve Coogan – endeavours to tell his rags-to-riches tale. Yet while the ingredients are all there for an enthralling biopic – porn, drugs, money, death – the film is less than the sum of its parts, a surprisingly tame take on the life of a man whose name became synonymous with sex.
Raymond’s tale isn’t told in chronological order, proceedings instead kicking off with genuine tragedy as Paul mourns the death of his daughter from a drug overdose. As he muses over where it all went wrong, the film travels back in time to recount his remarkable story.
