The Stone Roses: Made of Stone Review IGN All

This should really have been the one. Shane Meadows – director of This is England, Dead Man’s Shoes and the like – overseeing a documentary about the unlikely resurrection of The Stone Roses, one of the UK’s greatest ever bands.


Yet while the film is a blast throughout, Made of Stone also feels like a missed opportunity, as if there was a more compelling story that Shane and co never quite managed to nail.


The doc kicks off rather unexpectedly with quotes from Alfred Hitchcock and William Burroughs alongside footage of the Roses’ massive Manchester homecoming gigs, before segueing into a potted history of the band featuring charming home videos of singer Ian Brown, guitarist John Squire, bassist Mani and drummer Reni in more innocent, pre-fame days.
