Batman #21 kicks off Scott Snyder and Greg Capullo’s Zero Year, an exploration of Bruce Wayne’s inexorable evolution into the Dark Knight. A common complaint readers have had with the New 52 is that it seemed to involve a great deal of reference to the point of tedium. Many titles have seen origins stories mildly tweaked and decades old plot lines rehashed. A lot of the time, it's felt like obligatory treading of familiar waters before getting to the main event, but not so with Batman. With stories that look to the past for inspiration without becoming slaves to it, series writer Scott Snyder has managed to succeed where others have failed. Like Death of the Family before it, Zero Year riffs on a familiar narrative while still feeling fresh.
