Warning: full episode spoilers follow.
I've seen my fair share of movies and TV shows where a character melodramatically announces "There's a storm coming!" to foreshadow great hardship and suffering. I have to say, it's nice to see a character speak that line and actually mean it literally for once. The residents of Defiance dealt with some nasty weather this week. But the so-called "Razor Rain" was more of a backdrop as a number of characters paired off and worked through some lingering tension in varying ways. This was perhaps the first episode of the series so far that made effective use of a large cast and didn't merely hone in on a few faces.
In some ways, "Good Bye Blue Sky" wasn't as dramatic as it could have been. There was little real sense of danger to the Razor Rain, partly because the special effects were less than convincing. As usual, the CG wasn't quite up to the task, and the shots of computer-animated debris falling barely seemed to mesh with the real-world landscape. But there was also the fact that the various characters seemed to take the storm in stride and, except for poor Tommy, were never in any physical danger. I briefly wondered if the writers might kill off Tommy in this episode, particularly with actor Dewshane Williams being credited as a guest star in the credits rather than a full-fledged cast member. The show hasn't done much with his character yet, and I'm glad they chose to keep in in play and presumably keep exploring his relationship with Irisa.
