Superman Unchained #1 Review IGN All

Without a doubt, Scott Snyder and Jim Lee’s Superman Unchained is the most entertaining Superman story in some time. This Superman is a smart, well-read journalist and has the verbosity to match. It’s the merging of the all-powerful Kryptonian with the hard-working writer Clark Kent that makes this book ring true. More importantly, by embracing the elements of the New 52 instead of shying away from them, Superman Unchained has the potential to be the definitive version of Superman for a new generation.


This story feels so classic that it’s almost a shame that Superman is wearing the version of the costume with wrist-gauntlets, a high collar, and no red underwear. I say almost because while the duds don’t look quite that good in Action Comics and the main Superman series, it does always look spot-on when Lee draws it. This Superman is all lean muscle and warm facial features, like a kindhearted linebacker, yet there are a few moments when his eyes glow, making him chillingly intimidating. This is a more layered Superman, and it shows in his art.
