The first issue of the newly relaunched Batman: Black and White was glorious, filled to the brim with gorgeous artwork and fun, well constructed stories. Sadly, the second issue falls way behind. The art is still beautiful, for the most part, but the stories fall pretty flat and fail to capture the greatness of that first issue. If anything, the dip in quality in this issue really makes that inflated price point sting.
Out of the five stories, only one really nails it. “Into the Circle” by Rafael Grampa looks amazing and is a fun little story about Batman getting some exercise in, which basically means he beats the crap out of some goons. The artwork is finely detailed and ugly, but in a good way. Seriously, if we just got a whole book by Grampa, that hefty price tag would have been worth it. The last story by Michael Uslan and Dave Bullock is good, too, but reads more like a neat trick than a good story.
