Filth Review IGN All

Die Hard. Gremlins. Eyes Wide Shut. Kiss Kiss Bang Bang. The history of cinema is littered with fantastic films about horrible things happening at Christmas. And now Filth can be added to the list. The movie kicks off with a drunk Santa urinating in an alleyway, and then proceeds to take a steaming great dump all over the festive season.


Based in the Irvine Welsh novel of the same name, the film is set in Edinburgh and stars James McAvoy as Detective Sergeant Bruce Robertson, a deeply troubled policeman who in the film’s first few minutes manages to be racist, misogynist and homophobic.


Indeed, at times he seems like a Scottish Bad Liuteneant, getting coked up before making arrests and sexually harassing most of the women he comes into contact with, though in this instance he pleasures himself in front of Frank Sidebottom re-runs rather than random teenage girls.
