Warning: Full spoilers for the episode follow...
Taking a few pages from the 1959 sci-fi short story "Flowers for Algernon" (about a janitor named Charlie who undergoes intelligence-boosting brain surgery), Game of Thrones executive producer/showrunners D.B. Weiss and David Benioff penned this week's Almost Sunny - all about a janitor named Charlie who undergoes intelligence-boosting experiments.
So similarities, definitely - with that being the point, I'm sure. An extra treat for those who've read, or simply know, the original story. Especially the part where Charlie's intelligence grows to such an extent that he's no longer able to relate to his friends or to the woman he loves - in this case, The Waitress. Who becomes, through Charlie's new snobby eyes, a chatty, catty bore who says "like" all the time. Pretty funny.
