Sex Criminals #2 Review IGN All

sexcrim2-cov We didn't think Matt Fraction and Chip Zdarsky's Sex Criminals could possibly get any better than its stellar first issue. We were wrong. Issue #2 builds on the solid foundation established in the first installment and elevates it to something very close to perfection.


Part of what made Sex Criminals #1 so successful as a story was its structure: Suzie narrated her experiences by breaking the fourth wall with the particular brand of wit and whimsy that's forged by surviving tragedy. While Suzie still has a few moments where she addresses the reader directly, for the most part, the second issue focuses on Jon, or as Suzie calls him, "This f***ing guy." His backstory, as he tells it to Suzie, is an altered version of the story-within-the-story element we've already seen, but it's no less effective. Jon's narration is delightfully irreverent and simultaneously heartfelt, and Fraction establishes his voice as authentic and distinct from Suzie's. Where Suzie is poetic, Jon is crass; She calls the frozen time after achieving an orgasm "The Quiet," while Jon dubs it "Cumworld." While Sex Criminals doesn't adopt a conventional dual point-of-view structure, it does use the two perspectives to inform both characters' narratives.
