The Originals takes an interesting tactic with its debut episode. This is a spinoff series that has a ton of plot already set up on The Vampire Diaries, which left producers in a bit of a bind. They want to have this series be accessible to new viewers, but that means they have to explain things Vampire Diaries viewers already know. The solution? Show us events we’ve already seen, but with a different perspective and with new details added.
And so, “Always and Forever” actually is a parallel story to “The Originals” backdoor pilot episode of The Vampire Diaries from this past spring. It takes place at the same time, but from the perspective of the vampire Elijah (Daniel Gillies), who, in this version, appears in nearly every scene.
