Jenji Kohan is developing a new drama for HBO based on the Salem witch trials. Kohan is best known for creating two hit comedy series, Weeds and Orange is the New Black, which is currently filming its second season. She will write the script for the Salem project along with Bruce Miller (Alphas, Eureka) and Tracy Miller.
THR reports “The untitled Salem period drama explores the circumstances surrounding one of the most compelling chapters in American history, when intolerance and repression set neighbor against neighbor and led a town to mass hysteria.”
The Salem witch trials took place in and around the town of Salem, Massachusetts in the 1690s. Over the course two years, dozens of innocent townsfolk were arbitrarily charged with practicing witchcraft, convicted and hanged. The barbaric trials and the events leading up to them are one of the darkest chapters in early American history and perhaps the best-known example of mass hysteria ever recorded.
