One of the first projects to be produced by Xbox Entertainment Studios will be a documentary series available only on Xbox One and Xbox 360, Microsoft announced today. The first of these episodes will be a documentary covering the excavation of the landfill site containing copies of the infamously bad Atari 2600 game E.T. The Extra-Terrestrial.
Word of a potential documentary on the subject surfaced earlier this year when Fuel Entertainment announced it had reached a deal to excavate the landfill site in New Mexico. The Atari 2600 game E.T. was rushed to market in 1982, the year of the film's release, in order to be available in time for the holidays. As a result, the final product was a disaster and is often regarded as one of the worst games of all time. While its role in causing the video game crash of 1983 tends to be exaggerated, the game was so bad that Atari was left with millions of unsold copies of it -- copies which Atari reportedly dumped in a landfill in Alamogordo, New Mexico.
