The Sacrament is not an easy watch. It’s the kind of film that burrows under the skin as it flashes before your eyes, flooding the brain with doubt, fear, panic and grief as the narrative slowly edges towards its devastating denouement.
On the surface it’s the story of a guy trying to prise his sister from the clutches of a cult, but dig deeper and you’ll find a film about how effortlessly the smart and manipulative can cast a spell over the vulnerable and weak.
And it’s made all-the-more disturbing by the fact that the story is rooted in reality, most notably the Jonestown Massacre, a tragedy that transpired in Guyana in 1978.
