The Wolverine did what many thought to be impossible: it redeemed Hugh Jackman’s Wolverine character from the low that began in X-Men: The Last Stand and hit rock bottom in X-Men Origins: Wolverine. The Wolverine is less a superhero film and is instead a slick action thriller that just so happens to have Logan at its center, and this Unleashed Extended Edition Blu-ray celebrates that concept. Separated into four discs – 3D theatrical Blu-ray, 2D theatrical, uncut, DVD/digital copy – this set is an encompassing and stunning set for the year’s most brutal comic book flick.
The main attraction here is director James Mangold’s extended and unrated version of the movie, which adds just over 12 minutes to the running time. While the new/extended scenes don’t improve the biggest problems that we had in our official review (primarily the end “boss battle” and the tone-deaf Viper character), they do expand on the things that work the best in this movie: character development and action scenes. There are smaller character moments interspersed throughout the movie for Logan but also Yukio and Mariko, fleshing both of the characters out with clever simplicity.
