Starz’s big new pirate series, Black Sails, debuts its first season on January 25th. However, work is already underway on Season 2. Explaining the decision to renew the show so early at the TCA (Television Critics Association) press tour today, Starz’ Chris Albrecht said, “We premiered the show at Comic-Con for the fans. The response was phenomenal. Some critics there declared ‘pirates are the new zombies.’ We thought that was some pretty good footsteps to follow in…. We loved the show.”
Beyond that, Albrecht noted that Black Sails was a big undertaking that takes time to make. With the early renewals they give for series like Black Sails and Da Vinci’s Demons, Albrecht remarked, “We’re picking good and being economically responsible. These shows, these big serialized dramas do continue to get better – the good ones at least.”
