Detective Comics #27 Review IGN All

As we all know, Batman made his first appearance in the pages of Detective Comics Vol. 1 #27 back in 1939. So for Detective Comics Vol. 2 #27, DC decided to celebrate by arranging an oversized anniversary for the second time in less than a year. Any excuse for a party, right? But whereas most of the content in Detective Comics #900 last year was varying shades of disappointing, this issue is far more successful and actually worth the inflated price tag.


Every story in issue #27 (well, most of them) plays on Batman's long, colorful history in some way. The issue kicks off with a look back at Golden Age Batman via the much-hyped Brad Meltzer/Bryan Hitch update of "The Case of the Chemical Syndicate." Meltzer tackles the tale from a very different angle. The original Bill Finger script was all action and mystery and hinged on the surprise twist that Bruce Wayne and Batman are one and the same. Meltzer's take is far more introspective, taking for granted that readers already know Batman's deal and featuring an internal monologue that explore's Bruce's motivations for putting on the costume. It's a well-written character study, though that monologue and the more immediate, plot-driven narration tend to stumble over each other at times. The final panel also has a hollow ring to it in how Meltzer tries to work a classic Bat villain into the mix.
