Graphic Novel Review: The Unwritten - Tommy Taylor and the Ship That Sank Twice IGN All

The Harry Potter franchise has inspired its fair share of imitators, both in terms of similar young adult novels and of more adult-oriented fare that lampoons and deconstructs the concept of a boy wizard hero. But when it comes to the latter, there are only two series worth mentioning in my mind - Lev Grossman's The Magicians trilogy and Mike Carey and Peter Gross' comic book opus The Unwritten. And it's a pivotal period for both series right now. The Magician's Land will be capping off that trilogy this fall, and Carey and Gross have recently delivered a full-length graphic novel spinoff of The Unwritten. That will be followed this month by a relaunch of the ongoing series.


The Unwritten: Tommy Taylor and the Ship That Sank Twice is an origin story for its titular hero. As anyone familiar with the ongoing comic knows, there's Tommy Taylor - lead protagonist of a very Potter-esque fantasy novel series, and Tom Taylor, pseudo-celebrity and the son of the author of said fantasy series. The Unwritten has always explored the connections between fictional Tommy and real-world Tommy, as well as the interplay between fiction and reality in general. That approach sets the tone for Tommy Taylor and the Ship That Sank Twice, which is really two origin tales rolled into one.
