Helix: Series Premiere Review IGN All

Advance review: A group of scientists are stuck in the Arctic as some unknown entity attacks them one by one, leading to massive mistrust. It's not a new story if you've seen The Andromeda Strain, The Thing, The Stand or Alien or indeed if you've ever watched The X-Files or Star Trek or any number of other sci-fi series. But the reason why the "trapped with a monster that's turning people into monsters" trope has become a trope is because its so damned compelling when its done well. And Helix does it well.

Executive Produced by Ronald D. Moore, the man behind Battlestar Galactica, and created by Cameron Porsandeh, Helix takes a group of CDC scientists to an Arctic research facility to investigate the outbreak of...something...that has killed two people and infected another man (played with gusto by Neil Napier), who happens to be the estranged brother of the CDC team's leader, Alan Farragut, played by Billy Campbell (The Rocketeer, The 4400). Campbell makes the trip with two brilliant doctors - one of them is his ex-wife (Kyra Zagorsky) and the other a new potential love interest (Jordan Hayes). A rather wacky veterinary pathologist (Catherine Lemeiux) and a U.S. Army major (Mark Ghanime) with a secret agenda round out the team. Again, none of this reinvents the wheel, but it's a likable cast that manages the script's soapy and/or familiar beats with aplomb, for the most part.
