The producers and cast of AMC’s upcoming Turn appeared at the TCA (Television Critics Association) press tour today, to discuss the upcoming series. Based on Alexander Rose’s book, Washington’s Spies, Turn tells the true story of the Culper Ring, America’s first spy ring, formed during the Revolutionary War.
Coming off of his just-completed series Nikita, executive producer Craig Silverstein is the showrunner on Turn. “In a way, it’s the first spy story,” Silverstein said of Turn. “Aliases, cover stories, dead drops, the idea of a black budget, a lot of cryptography. These things were invented by the Culper Ring - but out of necessity, not because they came in and experts and knew what they were doing. Reading Alex’s book, it wasn’t anachronistic. It was the start of it all.” Noted executive producer Barry Josephson, “You wouldn’t have predicted who these spies were and their reasons for being spies.”
