Let's look back a little bit.
Season 1 of Justified was okay. The pilot episode was fantastic and the rest of the season just kind of picked and chose things it wanted to use for later seasons. It paid off more later.
Seasons 2 and 3 were completely underrated. They had fantastic characters, they had moving parts, they had great acting, great writing, great everything.
Season 4 had some of the goods and the most ambitious plot yet, but didn't quite nail the characters.
What's made this series cool and likeable has been development of complex characters, particularly self-contained seasonal characters, like Quarles and Mags Bennett, but also Limehouse and Dickie Bennett. This combined with some pretty decent scripts and the intertwining of Raylan's personal drama with Boyd's takeover of the criminal underbelly of the land drove a very good series.
