The next live-action Star Wars film is still a long way off but the Disney XD animated series Star Wars: Rebels is right around the corner. (At least if you consider this fall right around the corner…) In anticipation of the upcoming show, executive producer Simon Kinberg took time out of his busy schedule to talk to EW.com about what viewers can expect from Rebels.
First, let’s look at talent. We’ve known for some time that the series takes place between the events of Episode III and Episode IV and that it chronicles the rise of the rebel alliance. Given that time frame, it’s fair to wonder if any characters from the films will make an appearance and, if so, whether they will be voiced by their original actors. When asked point blank if Darth Vader and the Emperor would be in the series, Kinberg plays coy. Though he says he’s “not allowed” to reveal whether either James Earl Jones or Ian McDiarmid is involved, he adds, “I can say that wherever possible we would want to use the original talent.” It’s a text interview so you can’t tell, but I have to believe his eye was twitching while he said that.
