The Most Influential Monsters in Movie History IGN All

Movie monsters can come in many forms. They can be giant beasts created by the shortcomings of mankind, or they can be super-killers that haunt us from beyond the grave. From vampires to dinosaurs to giant apes to zombies and beyond, the movie monster has been a staple of cinema since the earliest of horror movies in the late 19th century.


With a new Godzilla on the horizon and Pacific Rim behind us, we thought it was high time to take a look at the most important movie monsters in history, taking us from Nosferatu to Jurassic Park.


First Appeared: 1922


There were movie monsters before Nosferatu’s Count Orlok, but none influenced filmmakers or terrified audiences in the same way. F.W. Murnau’s horror film was the first adaptation of Bram Stoker’s Dracula – albeit unauthorized and later condemned by the Stoker estate. Max Schreck’s performance as Dracula analogue Orlok is eerie and iconic, and accompanied by Murnau’s expressionist imagery, there isn’t another horror film of the era that has made an impact like Nosferatu.
