The monster movie can come in many forms. It can be horror, fantasy, comedy, science-fiction, or drama. The best ones, though, are usually some unique combination of different genres. Everyone loves a good movie monster, but oftentimes the creature itself has a longer lifespan than the movies that birthed them.
We thought it was time to look at the movies themselves; some of them introductions to iconic movie monsters, some of them sequels, and some of them homages or remakes. What every film on this list shares, however, are the thrills that come along with seeing some sort of fantastic beast on the big screen.
Gareth Edwards’ visionary Monsters is an out-of-the-box and low-budget approach to a genre that’s been so well traversed, we’re able to make a top 25 list out of it. Monsters is as much a relationship drama as it is a monster movie, and Edwards’ movie is a street-level view of how an alien invasion affects every day people. So often we see military folks or scientists in the struggle to save the world, but Monsters is just about two people trying to save themselves.
