The Grid series has always been something of a racing buffet. Whether it was the multinational approach of the original showcasing the differing racing styles, Grid 2's cornucopia of event types, or the series as a whole's mixture of simulation and arcade elements, Codemasters' franchise has always been about variety. For the development studio’s (presumed) final lap before next-gen, Grid Autosport does indeed promise a multitude of automotive options, but also looks to fix a few of the minor dings that have kept the series just slightly off the pace of franchises like Forza and Gran Turismo.
The demo build of Grid Autosport tested featured roughly three hours’ worth of competitions with the first of eight championship series in each of the five central styles; Touring Car's standard races, Endurance's marathons that mix safely driving with overtaking opponents, the fast but frail cars in Open Wheel, Street's urban action in narrow roads, and the drift-focused contests in Tuner. While a series can stretch to five races, each of the disciplines we dipped into consisted of only a pair each (though most had optional qualifying rounds that allowed you to improve the starting position for the first race or granted a single bonus point for the series). While the prime directive for each series is of earning enough points to rank at or above the spot dictated by your sponsor (coming in first gives you 24, so that potential pre-series point isn't a huge advantage), you'll have plenty of other objectives, including a batch of mini-objectives from potential new sponsors that ask you to perform certain acts (like hitting a top speed, outscoring a specific opponent, or keeping first place for a certain number of laps).
