It’s impossible to discuss Southern Bastards without bringing up Jason Aaron’s masterpiece, Scalped. This is not because the former feels like an imitation of the latter. It is because Aaron himself pays homage to the latter in the pages of the former, as if he’s daring you to assume you know what he’s capable of as a storyteller. He also seems to be daring himself to reach even higher than he did in Scalped. If the first issue is any indication, it won’t be long before he does.
